B: Just thinking about doing a little research.
A: Oh really? Research for class?
B: Yeah, research about the best places to start a career in sonography in.
A: Wow. You got inspired by that talk we heard from Professor Bates, right?
B: Yes! It really made me think about where I wanted to practice sonography after we graduate.
A: What did you find out so far?
B: Well, one of the main things that stood out to me was ultrasound technician salary; 2015 looks like its going to be a good year to us.
A: What do you mean by that?
B: The latest information on sonography salary released by the Bureau of Labor Statistics was for 2013. The numbers were really great that year – employment of 58,205 and an annual salary of more than $67,000 on average!
A: Wow that’s great! I know employment growth for the rest of the country is only a little bit higher than 10 percent.
B: 11 percent to be exact. Sonographer employment is expected to increase by 46 percent in ten years between 2012 and 2020. Despite this, employment and salary varies greatly among different states.
A: What state actually pays sonographers the best?
B: California is on the top of the list! It’s both the highest paying state in the US, as well as having the most employed sonographers. Sonographers earn an average annual salary of $86,500. Other states that pay the best are Oregon, Washington, Alaska, and Rhode Island. On the other hand, the state that pays sonographer the lowest is Alabama, with an average annual salary of $55,830.
