A: Why does the career counselor keep mentioning accredited ultrasound technician schools when we look at sonography colleges and universities together?
B: Are you planning on taking the diagnostic medical sonography program for the fall semester?
A: I’m thinking about it. But since no one in my family is a sonographer, I’m finding it hard to choose a program and school I’d want to enroll in.
B: Well, in choosing a school – not just a sonography school – accreditation is very important. Do you remember when our sister college was accredited last year? Our nursing program was accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs or CAAHEP.
A:So you mean, it’s not the school that’s accredited, it’s the school’s program?
B: Exactly! Be wary of schools that keep touting themselves as “accredited”. It is the diagnostic medical sonography program should be accredited by CAAHEP.
A: But what exactly is the big deal about becoming accredited?
B: When a program is accredited, it means that it has passed the high standards set for allied health programs all over the country. They will best prepare you for the ARDMS certification exam for sonographers.
