B: Yes, Mark?
A: Have you decided whether to pursue Radiologic Technology or Sonography yet?
B: I’ve pretty much made up my mind regarding this whole radiology vs. sonography issue. Why?
A: I need some advice. I’ve done some reading on the topic but I’m still undecided. Salaries are very close together, although they vary in terms of area and industry.
B: That’s right. What seems to be your issue?
A: I’m concerned about safety in the workplace, actually.
B: In terms of safety, sonography wins by a mile. One of the major drawbacks of being a radiologic technician is working with machines that emit radiation – like MRIs. There’s a reason by MRIs and Xrays are not advised for pregnant women and people with compromised immune systems since radiation exposure can damage the body. What more with the technicians who handle the machine on a day to day basis.
A: Aren’t radiologic technicians required to wear protective gear?
B: They are but there is still a level of exposure to be concerned about. You don’t exactly wear head to toe gear on the job.
A: I see! What about sonography?
B: Sonography is probably the safest diagnostic procedure today. It only uses low-level sound waves that don’t harm the tissue – which is why it’s the golden standard used in OB-GYNE cases. The only thing you have to worry about is physical problems like a bad back since sonography requires a lot of movement and dexterity from technicians.
