A: Good morning, Jade. I’d like you to meet Ms. Anne Robbins, she’s a radiation therapist. She’ll be discussing the radiation therapy career pros and cons and how it fares compared with ultrasound technology. Ms. Anne, this is Cathy.
B: Hello, Ms. Anne.
C: Hello, Cathy. It’s nice to meet you.
B: Likewise, miss. How long have you been a radiation therapist?
C: Well over ten years, actually. I work for the local hospital – now I’m in administration but spent 7 years in clinical practice.
B: That’s great. I have a few questions regarding your occupation. What exactly does a radiation therapist do?
C: A radiation therapist works primarily with cancer patients. We administer therapy using radiation machines, conferring with the oncology specialists.
B: How is that different from ultrasound technology and radiologic technology?
A: The two that you mentioned are diagnostic examinations. Ultrasound technology uses sound waves while radiologic technology uses radiation.
C: If anything, radiation therapy is more similar to radiologic technology.
B: But doesn’t that mean that the technician and therapist are exposed to radiation?
C: The risk is much higher, yes, compared to ultrasound technology. Radiation therapists wear gear to protect themselves from the effects of radiation but of course, there will always be a certain amount of risk. That’s one of the big cons in taking up a career in radiation therapy.
A: There are a lot of pros as well. Working with cancer patients is very rewarding, especially if treatment becomes successful.
B: I understand. I would like to learn more about radiation therapy, to be honest. Where do you suggest I do my research?
C: Visit ultrasoundtechniciancenter.org. They not only cater to people interested in ultrasound tech but also other medical technician and therapy specialists.
A: I’ll make sure to tell my other students as well. Thank you, Ms. Anne.
B: Thank you!
C: It was my pleasure.
