A: Hi Mom! Did you have a nice day at work?
B: It was okay. I had a little trouble with one of my patients but everything was okay in the end.
A: What happened?
B: A patient had difficulty breathing during the ultrasound I was giving him. Good thing it was just a positional problem. The resident doctor and I handled the situation quickly so the patient stabilized.
A: Wow. I didn’t know being a sonographer was so exciting!
B: Well, there are quite a few sonography pros and cons, as with every other job out there. My job is pretty quiet usually but there are times like this that get a little action packed.
A: What’s the best thing about being a sonographer?
B: I’m not going to lie — the salary is amazing anywhere you work in the US, but the amazing career opportunities and interaction with other health professionals is my favorite part. Before I worked in the hospital, I worked as a researcher at my university.
A: And the worst thing?
B: It’s a physically demanding job. I have to be on my toes all the time — good stamina and body mechanics are a must if you want to become a sonographer like me. The long work hours in the same positions do a pretty bad number on your back so I have to be careful about that.
A: I understand. I was really interested in sonography after I went with you to work during last month’s career day.
B: You can read a few articles on this website called ultrasoundtechniciancenter.org. It helped me a lot when I was deciding what program to apply for during college.
A: Thanks, Mom!
B: You’re welcome.
