Ultrasound Technician and Similar Occupations

How different is sonography from other medical technician occupations? Visit http://www.ultrasoundtechniciancenter.org/ and learn about ultrasound technicians, radiologic techs, and nuclear medicine techs.

A: Hi Bob! Were you waiting long?
B: Only for a few minutes, Rick. How are you?
A: I’m fine. It’s been a little bit busy at work – but you know that. The hospital has been running the staff a little thin because of the renovations going on.
B: Yeah. The nuclear medicine department where I work is getting a little hectic ever since the renovations of the sonogram rooms started.
A: You got that right, since we’ve been using half of your examination rooms.
B: You know, I was actually able to observe a sonography procedure the other day. I didn’t know it was so complicated. Manipulating the transducer looks pretty difficult.
A: The diagnostic medical sonography program focuses so much on skill building during clinical training. Much of our manipulation technique is actually learned on the job. And speak for yourself! Though, admittedly, putting a patient inside a giant MRI machine is easy, actually using the equipment is difficult too.
B: Training is the answer too! Nuclear medicine programs place great importance on analysis skills – which is developed on the job as well. Though we did have our share of intense clinical training during the undergrad program.
A: I realize most medical technologist occupations have similar characteristics after all. An ultrasound technician is trained to use diagnostic equipment, take samples from patients, and analyze results – and so are other medical techs.
B: That’s right. The main difference simply lies in the equipment used, as well as the specialty we have.
A: You know, if you’re interested in learning more about sonography, just visit ultrasoundtechniciancenter.org. They have a lot of basic information about the procedure, as well similarities and differences among medical technician occupations.
B: Okay. I will. Thanks, Rick!
A: Sure, Bob. See you at work tomorrow!
B: See you!
