B: Yes Cindy?
A: What do you do at work? I know dad does something in an office but I want to know what you do at work.
B: Well, Cindy, your dad and I both work in a hospital. Your dad is in administration – that means he and his office is responsible for running the hospital and making decisions. I’m an ultrasound tech. We work in diagnostics.
A: What do ultrasound techs do exactly? And what is diagnostics?
B: Well, diagnostics is a branch of medicine that is responsible for performing tests on patients to help figure out if they’re sick or healthy. In ultrasound technology, I use a machine called a sonogram. It sends waves of sound through a person’s body which bounce back at different times and create images of bones, organs, and other internal structures.
A: Oh wow! That sounds so cool!
B: It’s pretty great. I get to meet a lot of different people and be able to plan out their care with their physicians.
A: Do ultrasound technicians earn a lot of money?
B: Well, it’s not all about the money, honey. However, generally speaking we are one of the better paid medical technicians in the United States. The average annual salary of a sonographer is about $67,000.
A: That is a lot. We learned about the annual salary of all jobs in the country at school today. The average annual salary of occupations in the US is just under $47,000.
