Advanced Sensing Unit Technologies for Next-Generation Automobiles

This report sums up the development of auto emissions sensors at Argonne National Laboratory. 3 types of sensing unit technologies, i.e., ultrasound, microwave, and ion-mobility spectrometry (IMS), were evaluated for engine-out emissions monitoring. An IMS sensing unit with a radioactive 63 Ni ion source was initially developed and applied to measurement of hydrocarbons and NOx emissions.
