DAY IN THE LIFE OF AN ULTRASOUND TECH | SONOGRAPHER | ULTRASOUND CAREER
Hi YouTube fam! Welcome back to another video! If you are new here, I am Geselle, an ultrasound technologist who LOVES Disney and aims to spread ultrasound awareness and PAWSitivity!!!
Today’s video is the LAST AND FINAL episode of the DAY IN THE LIFE of a sonographer series of 2020!!!
I have had so much fun making these videos for you and bringing you along to work with me. I show you guys what it’s like to be “in charge” of the ultrasound department, or “desk.” We call it “work flow.” In order for the department to run smoothly, someone (typically the supervisor or lead technologist) will be in charge of “running” the desk which includes duties like: assigning tasks and patients to ultrasound technologists, answering phones, doing paperwork, talking to radiologists, keeping an eye on the student, knowing how to delegate STAT exams and ROUTINE exams, organizing the schedule, making sure exams are getting done, answering doctors’ and nurses’ questions, making sure procedures are ready to go and getting done, and MUCH MUCH more. These are very much so supervisor duties at our department but a lot of times there are lead techs who know how to create a good flow environment. I was trained to also run the desk as a student and run the desk periodically when the lead technologists are out or when the supervisor asks me to. So here’s a day where I was in charge, it was a Saturday, and it was a VERY busy procedure day. We had thoracentesis and paracentesis patients… (thank goodness there were no biopsies or weird aspirations/ needle injections this day). Running the desk takes a lot of patience, discipline, critical thinking, and ample knowledge of exams, tasks, and the hospital itself. I hope you find this video entertaining, helpful, and if you have any questions at all don’t hesitate to ask!!
ALL HOSPITAL DEPARTMENTS RUN DIFFERENTLYThe hospital I work at is a very BIG hospital.. there are over 650+ beds. We have a separate pediatric ER and adult ER, plus labor and delivery, plus a trauma and burn unit, also cardiovascular floors, outpatients, biopsies, procedures, the O.R. (operating room) AND more!!! There sometimes are more than 5 technologists at a time in one shift, there are always at least 2 technologists on.. so tasks, STATS, routines, exams, procedures, and patients need to be delegated. We have about 10 machines. Not all hospitals are like mine. Just in case you wonder why we have supervisor duties.. most places have lead technologists and/or a supervisor who is not actually scanning.
