NIPT TEST RESULTS | CHOROID PLEXUS CYST | EIF | LOW PAPP-A | 23 WEEKS PREGNANCY UPDATE

In this pregnancy update vlog, we give you an update on our NIPT Test Results. NIPT stands for noninvasive prenatal testing. This test determines the risk that a fetus will be born with certain genetic abnormalities, including chromosomal disorders such as Down Syndrome (Trisomy 21) or Edwards Syndrome (Trisomy 18). The reason that Caroline took an NIPT is for the three reasons below:

(1) LOW PAPP-A: At both her first and second trimester screenings, Caroline tested low for PAPP-A. PAPP-A is pregnancy-associated plasma protein A, and low levels are associated with miscarriage, low birth weight, preterm birth, and chromosomal disorders such as Down Syndrome and Edwards Syndrome.

(2) ECHOGENIC INTRACARDIAC FOCUS (EIF): When Caroline went in for her anatomy scan ultrasound, the ultrasound technician found an echogenic intracardiac focus in our baby’s heart. An EIF is essentially described as a “bright spot in the heart.” It is found in 3-5% of “normal” pregnancies and up to 30% of pregnancies with Asian mothers, but it is still thought to be a “soft marker” for chromosomal disorders, particularly Down Syndrome.

(3) CHOROID PLEXUS CYST: The anatomy scan ultrasound technician also found a choroid plexus cyst in our baby’s brain during the anatomy scan. This is essentially a fluid-filled bubble in the brain. It occurs in 1-2% of “normal” pregnancies but is still thought to be a “soft marker” for chromosomal disorders, particularly Edwards Syndrome.

Thank you for your prayers throughout this pregnancy. We truly do appreciate every one.
